Police arrest man over alleged Qur’an desecration in Kebbi

The Kebbi State Police Command has apprehended a 29-year-old man named Abubakar Musa in connection with an alleged plot to desecrate a Holy Qur'an in Zuru Local Government Area. Musa, a resident of Rafin Mose Village, was arrested based on charges of criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious materials, use of spells and hypnosis, and actions that could incite public unrest.

The incident allegedly took place on August 9, 2026, around 7pm in Zango area of Zuru. Preliminary investigations revealed that Musa conspired with two other suspects, Rabi'u Tela and Hamza Zango, who are still at large. The suspects were allegedly involved in digging a pit inside a woman's room, Zarau Hassan, and burying a copy of the Qur'an along with other items such as semen, kolanuts, underwear, and dead animals, which the police described as 'fetish materials'.

The police claim these actions were intended to make the victim, Hassan, more obedient to her husband, Tela. The Command stated that the circumstances surrounding the alleged act had the potential to disrupt peace among the Muslim community. Efforts are underway to arrest the two fleeing suspects, while Musa remains in police custody awaiting further investigation.

He will subsequently be charged to court. The Commissioner of Police, Umar M. Hadejia, affirmed that the Command would enforce strict adherence to the law against any actions that could jeopardize religious harmony and public order.
