Penang church marks 240 years of Catholic heritage through two world wars

The Church of the Assumption in George Town, Penang, is set to celebrate its 240th anniversary tomorrow. Established in 1786 by French missionary Reverend Father Arnold Garnault, the church has withstood the test of time, surviving two world wars and numerous challenging periods. As the oldest Catholic church in Penang and a mother parish for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Penang, the church has played a significant role in shaping the region's Catholic life and education.

Originally founded on Church Street, the church moved to its present location along Farquhar Street in 1860 under Reverend Father Claude Manissol. It served as the cathedral and Mother Church of the Diocese from 1955 to 2003 before the bishop's seat was moved. The church's current structure, featuring two wings added in 1928, has a cruciform layout and houses a historic pipe organ, the second oldest playable pipe organ in Malaysia.

The anniversary celebrations include a commemorative plaque unveiling at the church's garden, recognizing the contributions of Penang's Eurasian community to the church's establishment. The Penang Eurasian Association will host an Eurasian Fiesta at the Assumption Church Hall, showcasing the community's culinary traditions, music, and heritage. The anniversary festivities will continue with an Assumption Church Choir concert featuring the church's historic pipe organ and sacred music.
