Pattaya crackdown finds 17 Cambodian beggars, including babies

Pattaya police conducted a crackdown on begging activities along Pattaya Beach on 11 August, resulting in the arrest of 17 Cambodian nationals, including seven children. The operation, which involved authorities from Pattaya City, Pattaya police, Chon Buri immigration officers, and social welfare officials, was prompted by complaints from residents and businesses regarding foreign nationals begging and approaching tourists at popular tourist areas.

The detained individuals consisted of 10 adults and seven children. Among the adults, one man and nine women were apprehended, while the children ranged in age from babies and toddlers aged seven months, two years, and three years. Some of the adults were observed carrying young children as they solicited money from tourists. Authorities noted that several of the Cambodian nationals had a history of being arrested, prosecuted, and deported from Thailand, only to return and resume similar activities.

Additionally, eight homeless Thai nationals were detained for allegedly being intoxicated while asking for money. All those arrested were taken to be documented before being handed over to Chon Buri’s social welfare authorities for further legal proceedings and assistance as needed. The primary objective of the crackdown was to maintain public order, minimize disturbances to tourists, and uphold Pattaya’s reputation as a secure and hospitable tourist destination.
