OpenAI ditches Recall-style screenshot surveillance for friendly keylogging

OpenAI is introducing a new feature called Computer History, which allows users to record their computer interactions across apps and websites. This opt-in feature aims to capture input events, such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and app switches, and store them unencrypted locally for up to 48 hours. Computer History then sends these events to OpenAI's servers to generate summaries and memory files, which can be used to improve ChatGPT responses, surface automation opportunities, and aid in resuming prior work.

While Computer History does not capture screen images, microphone input, or system audio, it does increase the risk of prompt injection from content within apps and websites. Users can opt-out during communications with others or exclude sensitive apps, but Computer History is currently available only to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise users on macOS, excluding certain regions like the European Economic Area, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
