Onion traders hail Trade Minister’s intervention as Ghana-Nigeria trade dispute eases

Ghanaian onion traders have lauded Trade Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare for her role in resolving the recent trade dispute between Ghana and Nigeria that had disrupted onion shipments. The Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society and the Cross Border Women Traders Association both praised the Minister's efforts in facilitating the resumption of onion trade between the two nations after Nigeria's suspension of exports.

The traders explained that the dispute had left businesses in limbo, potentially impacting farmers, transport operators, and consumers along the supply chain. At a meeting in Accra on August 12, 2026, Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare urged both Ghanaian and Nigerian stakeholders to end the impasse and promote a stable trading relationship. She emphasized the importance of stronger economic ties between the two countries within the ECOWAS region.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare cautioned that failing to resolve the dispute could have broader economic repercussions for those relying on the onion trade and consumers in both nations. According to Osman Mohammed, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Onion Sellers and Importers Cooperative Society, all four Ghanaian trucks carrying onions from Nigeria that had been impounded have been released.

Traders confirmed that Nigerian trucks that had arrived in Ghana had finished unloading their goods at markets throughout the country. The traders expressed confidence that the Minister's intervention would lead to a long-term resolution of the dispute, enhance cooperation between businesses in Ghana and Nigeria, and bolster agricultural trade and economic integration across the ECOWAS sub-region.
