On cam: Eggs, muck thrown at ex-TMC MLA held in RG Kar victim's 'hurried' cremation case

New Delhi experienced a chaotic scene as former TMC MLA Nirmal Ghosh faced a mob outside Khardah Police Station on Friday. Ghosh, who had been arrested in Odisha a day earlier, was being transported to a prison van when protesters broke through the security and assaulted him. The attackers threw shoes, eggs, and muck at the former MLA, who was subsequently shielded by police and RAF personnel.

When Ghosh arrived at the Barrackpore sub-divisional court, his white kurta bore visible stains from the eggs and muck. Another accused, Sanjib Mukherjee, also faced protests while being escorted to his vehicle. Mukherjee, a close aide of Ghosh, was allegedly present at the Panihati crematorium when the victim's body was brought in after the autopsy.

The police have also implicated former Panihati municipality chairman Somnath Dey as an accused, though he has since fled. The arrests stemmed from a recent complaint filed by the victim's father on Monday, which was later converted into an FIR. The complaint accused Ghosh, who was then the sitting MLA from Panihati, of orchestrating a hurried cremation against the family's wishes, using his influence along with Mukherjee and Dey.
