Ohio city fires police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old, settles lawsuit with family

Akron, Ohio officials have terminated a police officer who shot and killed 15-year-old Jazmir Tucker, while also reaching a $4.75 million settlement with the teen's family. The settlement requires a judge's approval. The shooting occurred in November 2024, according to police, who stated that Tucker was carrying a loaded weapon.

Two officers allegedly heard gunshots, spotted Tucker and chased him before one of them fired multiple shots. Akron Mayor Shammas Malik mentioned that Officer Davon Fields was dismissed for multiple policy violations, including inadequate medical assistance and camera policy violations. The mayor also acknowledged the tragedy and the "enormous human and financial costs" associated with the case, stating that the city aims to implement policy changes to prevent similar incidents.

The head of the Akron police union disputed the firing, claiming it was a "political scapegoat" and vowed to challenge it. A grand jury declined to indict the officer nearly a year ago. Following the shooting, the mayor expressed concerns over the bodycam footage, questioning why officers did not activate their cameras immediately and why it took so long to provide first aid.
