NCCE, GHS sensitise pupils on drug and substance abuse in Sissala West

In the Sissala West District, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS) have launched a campaign to educate pupils in four basic schools about drug and substance abuse. Mr. Mustapha Iddrisu, the District Director of NCCE, explained that the program aimed to enlighten 800 students, made up of 412 boys and 388 girls, on the risks associated with drug and substance abuse while promoting healthy lifestyles.

The campaign visited Kunkorgu, Kusali, Kandia, and Buoti primary schools, providing a platform for young learners to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to make responsible decisions and resist negative behaviors that could affect their future. During the sessions, facilitator Mr. Mohammed Sulley, with the help of Mr. Nasare Alhassan, educated the pupils about common substances like alcohol, tramadol, marijuana, energy drinks, and the misuse of prescription-only medicines.

The facilitators emphasized the detrimental effects of substance abuse, including poor academic performance, addiction, mental and physical health complications, indiscipline, and violent behavior. They urged students to resist peer pressure, refrain from experimenting with drugs, and seek guidance from their parents, teachers, and health professionals when facing challenges.

The pupils were also encouraged to report any drug-related activities they witness to responsible adults and to become advocates against drug and substance abuse within their schools and communities.

Mr. Iddrisu reiterated the NCCE’s dedication to working together with the GHS, schools, parents, and community leaders to maintain a drug-free and healthy learning environment across the district.
