NADRA Launches Made-in-Pakistan QR Code-Based ID Cards

The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new National Identity Card in Pakistan, featuring a chipless design based on a secure QR code. This card was manufactured domestically by the National Security Printing Company (NSPC) in Karachi, as per NADRA’s specifications. The removal of the imported microchip improves secure digital verification and reduces dependence on foreign components.

The Federal Government approved the issuance of the new card on February 23, 2026. The QR code, which contains the cardholder’s information and photograph, can be scanned and verified using a smartphone through the Pak Identity (PakID) application. This allows institutions to input and store identity data more efficiently and accurately, minimizing errors.

The new card will also highlight specific symbols denoting family status, disabilities, senior citizens, organ donors, and individuals from Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Both Urdu and English versions of the cardholder’s name and address will be displayed. The card’s security features have been updated to meet contemporary requirements while utilizing domestic production capabilities.

The QR code-based card addresses the limitations of the previous chip-based Smart National Identity Card, which was introduced about 14 years ago but could not be effectively utilized due to a lack of chip readers and infrastructure. Verification of the QR code will be possible through a standard smartphone or specialized software attached to a camera.

Various authorized institutions, including telecom operators, banks, hospitals, Pakistan Railways, and police, will receive software to scan and authenticate the QR code on the card. The new card will be phased in starting August 14, 2026, initially replacing only the standard National Identity Card. By January 2027, it will be issued for all categories of national identity cards, including National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) and Juvenile Cards.

The Pakistan Origin Card (POC) will follow suit in the final phase. Existing identity cards will remain valid until their expiration dates.
