MCX launches crude sunflower oil futures contract

MCX has launched futures contracts on crude sunflower oil to help market participants manage price volatility and exposure to global supply-demand dynamics. With India importing nearly 2.8 million tonnes of its annual crude sunflower oil consumption, the contract aims to provide importers, refiners, processors and traders with an efficient risk-management mechanism.

Pune: The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX) announced on Friday the launch of futures contracts for Crude Sunflower Oil. India, consuming an estimated 26-27 million tonnes of edible oil annually, relies heavily on imports, with over 60% of its needs met from abroad. This high import dependence exposes the domestic market to global price fluctuations, supply-demand dynamics, currency changes, and the prices of competing edible oils.

Sunflower oil constitutes around 9% of India's edible oil consumption, with annual crude sunflower oil consumption at approximately 3.0 million tonnes. Nearly 2.8 million tonnes are imported, making the segment highly sensitive to international price developments and global supply conditions. The pricing of edible oils is closely linked, influenced by substitution patterns and the relative competitiveness of sunflower oil.

To address this, MCX aims to offer market participants a transparent and efficient exchange-traded mechanism to manage price exposure, thereby strengthening the domestic edible oil market. MCX's Chief Executive Officer, Praveena Rai, stated that the introduction of the Crude Sunflower Oil futures contract will enable importers, refiners, processors, traders, and other market participants to manage price volatility and enhance their risk management strategies through an exchange-traded platform.

The contract will be settled in cash, with prices quoted on an Ex-Tank Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) basis, excluding applicable sales tax and GST.
