Mark Rydell Dies: Oscar-Nominated ‘On Golden Pond’, ‘The Rose’ Director Was 97

Mark Rydell, an Oscar-nominated director renowned for his work on films such as "The Rose," "For the Boys," and "On Golden Pond," has passed away at the age of 97. Bette Midler, who starred in "The Rose" and "For the Boys" alongside the director, announced his death on Instagram. Midler credited Rydell for teaching her invaluable lessons on acting, stating that his guidance was crucial for his films.

The cause of death was not disclosed. Rydell's career as a director began with unconventional roots; he initially pursued a career in music, studying jazz piano before transitioning to acting. He studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse under Sanford Meisner, eventually becoming a working actor himself, including a six-year stint on the soap opera "As the World Turns."

His feature film directing debut came in 1967 with "The Fox." Rydell's significant work includes directing Steve McQueen in "The Reivers" and John Wayne in "The Cowboys." His collaboration with Midler led to the critically acclaimed "For the Boys" in 1991. Despite his numerous achievements, Rydell continued to work in television and film until the 2000s, with roles in movies like "James Dean" and "Even Money."

He was also a respected member of the Directors Guild of America. Rydell is survived by his three children, Amy, Christopher, and Alexander.
