Man arrested with R1.1 million hidden in Ford Raptor as two are nabbed for R200,000 police bribery

A 42-year-old man was apprehended by police after R1.1 million was discovered hidden in concealed shoe boxes within his Ford Ranger Raptor on the N3 highway near Tugela Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal. The operation was conducted by Gauteng Counter Intelligence Operations (GCI-OPS) following information that the suspect was transporting illicit substances.

Despite not finding any drugs, officers recovered more than R1.1 million in cash concealed inside shoe boxes, along with the Ford Ranger Raptor, a privately licensed firearm, a cellphone and a laptop. The suspect could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the money, leading to his seizure of the vehicle and confiscation of the assets.

During the suspect's interrogation, he allegedly attempted to bribe the investigating officer. Following this, officers initiated an entrapment operation that resulted in the arrest of two additional suspects who were allegedly offering R200,000 to influence the investigation. The R200,000 was seized, and the suspects' Volkswagen Amarok was confiscated.

The 42-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear in Ladysmith Magistrate's Court, while the two suspects from the sting operation appeared in Alexandra Magistrate's Court on August 14, 2026. The police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe emphasized the force's dedication to combating financial crimes and thwarting corruption, with attempts to bribe police officers resulting in criminal charges. Ongoing investigations into the matter are being pursued.
