Mahama vows to complete abandoned public projects, cites UTAS laboratory

President John Dramani Mahama reiterated the government's determination to finish neglected public projects across Ghana, highlighting the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) four-story central laboratory complex in Navrongo as a prime example. He personally inspected the stalled project on August 13, 2026, during his tour of the Upper East Region, emphasizing that taxpayer funds should not be wasted on abandoned initiatives.

Mahama stressed the necessity of completing and utilizing such facilities, stating that the central laboratory project, which began in 2016, is set for completion by 2027. With this modern infrastructure, UTAS aims to enhance teaching, research, innovation, and practical training opportunities. Additionally, Mahama mandated the Ministry of Roads and Highways to incorporate the UTAS request for around five kilometers of internal roads into their project inventory.

The President deemed the request feasible and emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure on the university campus. Mahama also reiterated the government's commitment to bolstering Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Ghana. He further expressed his backing for UTAS's plans to establish a medical school, acknowledging the initiative's potential to expand Ghana's capacity to train more medical professionals.
