Libya's Haftar played key role in release of US hostage held by Islamic State, sources say

US pilot Kevin Rideout, held captive by an Islamic State affiliate in Niger, was freed thanks to the efforts of Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar, according to four sources. Rideout, a missionary worker for the evangelical agency Serving in Mission, was kidnapped in October. The Libyan authorities took over the responsibility of releasing Rideout late on Thursday.

The role of Haftar in this deal highlights his position as a major security broker in the Sahel region, which has allowed him to leverage his influence with the Trump administration. It remains unclear what, if any, concessions were made in exchange for Rideout's release; one source suggested that a ransom was paid. Rideout was reportedly seized by unidentified men near Niamey, Niger, and taken to the western Tillaberi region, where Islamist militants affiliated with Islamic State and al Qaeda operate. The U.S. has been prioritizing the safe return of Rideout in the Sahel, even lifting sanctions on Malian government officials to facilitate safe passage.
