Landslide risks loom over communities in North-Central region

Communities in North-Central region face looming risks of landslides, threatening roads and homes. In Nghe An Province, a landslide on August 8 blocked a road in Muong Tip Commune, but authorities cleared the debris and reopened it within a few hours. However, the area remains at high risk for further landslides, prompting continuous monitoring and warnings to residents.

Coastal defense roads also face risks from eroded mountain slopes and unstable soil. In Cam Trung Commune, Ha Tinh Province, residents have reported frequent landslides, particularly during rainy seasons, which can take days to clear, leaving roads impassable. The coastal defense road, about 5 kilometers long, has seen 11 landslide incidents since 2024, caused by loose rocks in weak soil.

Despite temporary reinforcements, new landslide sites keep appearing, requiring substantial funding for a permanent solution. Meanwhile, residents near Truot Waterfall in Khe Tre Commune, Hue City, worry as riverbank erosion nears their homes, with landslide sites just meters away. Authorities have installed barriers, warning signs, and prohibited passage during adverse weather.

In Ky Anh Commune, Ha Tinh Province, cracks and subsidence along Choi Mountain pose risks to the Dong-Trung road, with local authorities installing warning signs and preparing evacuation plans if weather worsens. In Thanh Hoa Province, severe landslides and ground subsidence in Quan Son Commune have affected 17 households, prompting authorities to evacuate residents to safety.

Communities are urging authorities to assess risks, identify high-risk areas, and plan for new accommodations to ensure residents' safety from future landslides.
