KZN kingpin arrested in R500m guardrail theft syndicate crackdown

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Transport MEC, Siboniso Duma, has announced the arrest of a suspected kingpin linked to a massive theft of road guardrails, valued at over R500 million. The alleged kingpin was apprehended in Jacobs as part of an intelligence-led operation known as #NenzaniLaEzweni. Duma stated that the suspect, who owns a warehouse, was identified following the arrest of runners last week and is currently in police custody.

This arrest marks the beginning of efforts to dismantle a criminal syndicate responsible for the deaths of innocent people by removing guardrails from provincial roads, thereby exposing motorists to catastrophic accidents. The syndicate is accused of stripping guardrails worth millions from the KZN road network, which has invested over R500 million in their construction and maintenance.

These safety barriers are designed to absorb kinetic energy from speeding vehicles, preventing violent collisions. Duma warned that their removal has directly contributed to fatal accidents. The MEC has ordered investigations into potential links between the kingpin and companies awarded contracts to replace guardrails, as well as possible collusion with departmental staff, the tow truck industry, and scrapyards.
