Kenya and Uganda lawmakers seek joint action on cross-border challenges affecting vulnerable communities

Kenyan and Ugandan lawmakers met on August 13, 2026, at Bunge Towers in Nairobi to explore joint parliamentary cooperation in addressing cross-border challenges impacting vulnerable and marginalized communities in both nations. The National Assembly Committee on National Cohesion and Equal Opportunity in Kenya and Uganda's Committee on Equal Opportunities held discussions focusing on inequality, discrimination, exclusion, and the protection of vulnerable groups.

These issues often have implications that extend beyond national borders, necessitating collaboration between the two Parliaments.

Adan Yussuf Haji, chairperson of Kenya's committee, noted that Kenya and Uganda face similar challenges in promoting equality and safeguarding marginalized groups. He highlighted that parliamentary cooperation could enable lawmakers from both countries to compare approaches to these challenges and devise practical solutions. "If we work together, we will easily resolve the issues afflicting our people in the region," he emphasized.

Lamwaka Catherine, leader of Uganda's delegation and chairperson of Uganda's committee, stated that the engagement offered an opportunity for the two committees to exchange experiences related to legislation and parliamentary oversight. Given the parallel mandates of the committees, working together provides a valuable chance for peer learning and sharing practical parliamentary experiences in advancing equality, inclusion, and non-discrimination.

Catherine pointed out that some challenges faced by communities in Kenya and Uganda are not only similar but also cross national boundaries. The lawmakers stressed the need for policies and legislation that promote fairness, inclusion, and protection against discrimination, transcending individual national policies. Both committees agreed to maintain regular interactions and identify areas of collaboration to enhance peaceful coexistence and regional integration.
