Kebbi police reactivate Operation Velvet, strengthen traffic enforcement

The Kebbi State Police Command has reinstated Operation Velvet, a traffic enforcement initiative designed to enhance road safety, enforce regulations, and maintain order throughout the state. This initiative was announced in a statement released on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman. The statement outlined that Operation Velvet will begin on Friday, August 14, 2026, targeting violations such as tinted-glass permits, one-way driving, vehicle registration issues, fake or obscured number plates, and other traffic-related offenses.

Commissioner of Police Umar M. Hadejia emphasized that this operation would support ongoing security efforts, highlighting the potential for criminals to exploit unregistered vehicles and obscured number plates to avoid detection and engage in criminal activities. The police directive to officers participating in the exercise was clear: maintain professionalism and respect the rights of road users.

Any instances of extortion, harassment, or misconduct would be met with disciplinary measures. The command also urged motorists to ensure their vehicles meet all regulatory requirements and adhere to traffic rules. Furthermore, the public was encouraged to report any suspicious activities, extortion, or unprofessional behavior by police through designated channels.
