It’s up to you, parents: Sarawak minister says won’t shut kindergarten, childcare centres even if API is over 200

KUCHING, Aug 14 — Kindergartens and childcare centres in Sarawak may continue operations during the ongoing haze, according to State Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Fatimah Abdullah. Despite the requirement for these centers to close when the Air Pollutant Index (API) reaches 200 or higher, Fatimah emphasized that parents should decide whether to send their children to these facilities.

These centers serve as vital support systems for working parents, she noted in a statement. Fatimah, a member of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), explained that the centers could provide a secure and controlled environment for children, provided they have air conditioning, proper air filtration or purification systems, and adhere to standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Children who are unwell should stay home, while those attending the centers undergo screening upon arrival to ensure they are fit for admission. In case a child develops symptoms while at the center, parents will be contacted to retrieve their child. Outdoor activities at kindergartens and childcare centers should also be halted during the haze.

Parents are advised to ensure their children wear masks and limit their exposure to the outdoors while traveling to and from the centers. For children with asthma, respiratory issues, and other vulnerabilities, they should carry prescribed inhalers and inform the center of their condition and care needs. Fatimah also recommended that children stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking sufficient water.
