Israel awaits US approval for operation to seize strategic ridge in southern Lebanon - report

Lebanese officials report that Israel is awaiting US approval to launch a military operation to seize control of the Ali Taher Ridge in southern Lebanon. The ridge, situated north of the Litani River, overlooks significant areas of the Nabatieh region. The IDF is reportedly at a high level of readiness for such an operation.

According to US officials, while they cannot prevent Israel from taking action, they have requested the operation be limited, precise, and minimize civilian casualties to avoid the collapse of the framework of understandings between Israel and Lebanon. The US also opposes the idea of a permanent Israeli military presence in the area, in alignment with Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Hezbollah's importance to Israel is questioned as Lebanese sources suggest the ridge is not the primary focus for the terrorist organization, which reportedly maintains extensive infrastructure elsewhere. Israeli forces are currently focused on locating entrances, underground infrastructure, and command rooms beneath the ridge.

Lebanese military sources assert that the compound remains connected to supply routes and that Hezbollah operatives are present there. However, these claims have not been independently confirmed. Amid concerns over potential escalation, US officials are working to advance talks between Israel and Lebanon in Rome early September, aiming to achieve a gradual Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah's disarmament.

Israeli forces have reportedly continued strikes in southern Lebanon, including artillery fire toward the Ali Taher area. The ridge has become a key test of US efforts to maintain diplomatic efforts while Israel considers a potential military outcome.
