Iran President to visit India for BRICS Summit

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is scheduled to visit India for the 18th BRICS Summit, marking his inaugural trip to the country since the conflict with the US escalated in February. In addition to attending the summit, Pezeshkian will engage in bilateral talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on enhancing India-Iran relations, the status of the Chabahar port, and the latest developments in West Asia.

The Indian delegation is also anticipated to address the safety concerns of Indian seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz, with over 165 Indian sailors currently working in the strategic waterway. The two leaders exchanged their first conversation since the Iran-US ceasefire agreement in June, with Modi emphasizing the importance of free navigation in the Hormuz Strait.

Iran officially joined BRICS in January 2024, alongside Egypt, Ethiopia, and the UAE. Pezeshkian's visit follows a similar trip by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in June, who highlighted India's growing role as a global peacemaker in resolving tensions in West Asia.
