IndyCar’s Grand Prix Of Markham Practice Delayed By Track Build Issues

The inaugural Ontario Honda Grand Prix of Markham, the debut of the IndyCar Series on the temporary Streets of Markham street circuit, faced significant delays due to unfinished track construction. As of Friday, key elements such as race bridges, safety fencing, and timing and scoring cables remained incomplete, prompting officials to postpone the opening track sessions.

The traditional Thursday track walk was cancelled and rescheduled for Friday morning, disrupting the usual preparations. Teams were also directed to delay loading equipment onto the double-sided pit lane until late Thursday afternoon. Originally scheduled for a 8am ET start with support categories, the event saw both practice and the first on-track session postponed.

IndyCar announced that the opening practice session, set for 3:05pm ET, was also placed on hold pending the completion of track build and safety inspections. The series emphasized that further updates would follow throughout the afternoon. This marks a major shift for IndyCar's Canadian presence, moving away from Toronto’s Exhibition Place, a venue since hosting IndyCar racing since the 1980s.

The new 12-turn, 2.19-mile temporary circuit in Markham's downtown district was designed with technical challenges in mind, including short straightaways, heavy-braking sectors, and a double-sided pit lane. Track officials and promoters are working continuously to finalize safety installations, anticipating further schedule revisions as the situation unfolds.
