On the eve of India's Independence Day, August 15, 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru delivered his celebrated "Tryst with Destiny" speech to the Indian Constituent Assembly in New Delhi, just moments before the country declared its sovereignty from British rule. As midnight approached, Nehru famously proclaimed, "When the world sleeps, India will awaken to life and freedom."

In the 75 years since gaining independence, India has undergone a remarkable transformation. From a nation plagued by poverty, illiteracy, and poor healthcare, India now stands as the world's most populous country with an estimated population of 1.47 billion people, making up roughly 17.8% of the global population. The nation's economic landscape has also evolved dramatically, with its GDP reaching $3.92 trillion in 2025, placing it among the world's top economies.

India's population growth has slowed, with an estimated annual growth rate of 0.87% in 2026. Life expectancy has also increased significantly, from 31-32 years at independence to around 71-72 years today, largely due to improvements in healthcare and medical services. The country has made substantial progress in education, with literacy rates rising from 18% in 1951 to 80.9% today, with higher rates in urban areas (90%) compared to rural regions (77%).

Dramatic changes have occurred in infrastructure, with electricity access expanding from just 60.3% in 2000 to 99.5% in 2023, covering nearly all of India's population. The surge in internet usage also reflects the nation's digital transformation, with around 70% of India's population using the internet in 2025, totaling over 1.09 billion users.
