‘I gift my son a Ferrari every year’: Lalit Modi says his strict upbringing shaped his parenting

In an interview with ANI, former IPL chairman Lalit Modi discussed how his upbringing influenced his parenting style. He mentioned that his father, described as a "playboy of the world," and his unorthodox family dynamics left a significant impact on Modi. Modi's father and uncles were known for hosting the biggest parties in Delhi and breaking social norms, while his grandfather and grandmother were very orthodox. This contrast in family behavior shaped Modi's strict upbringing and parenting approach.

Modi revealed that his siblings faced stricter rules due to his rebellious nature. His sister was married off early, and his younger brother, who was eight years younger, had to marry immediately through an arranged marriage because of Modi's actions. Despite this, Modi himself never received a Ferrari, a symbol of luxury he desired greatly. However, for his son, he decided to gift him a Ferrari every year from the ages of 21 to 31, as a way to break the pattern of his own life where he always wanted more.

When asked if his parenting was considered good, Modi explained that his method was influenced by his own experiences and the desire to provide his children with what they wanted. He noted that his children, now 31 years old, were not more focused on acquiring material things after receiving his annual Ferrari gifts. Modi believes that giving children greater freedom and access to material possessions does not necessarily create an entitled individual, but rather depends on the balance between generosity and overindulgence.

Psychologist Dr. Sakshi Mandhyan, while agreeing that childhood experiences can shape parenting, cautioned against overcorrecting. She explained that while understanding one's own upbringing can help avoid repeating unhealthy patterns, an excessive effort to do the opposite may lead to an overcorrection, where parents become too lenient. The key, according to Dr. Mandhyan, is to strike a balance, understanding what aspects of one's past need to change and what can be carried forward in a conscious, controlled manner.
