Hegseth denies reports of poor conditions aboard USS Abraham Lincoln

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth rebuked allegations of subpar conditions and psychological distress on the USS Abraham Lincoln, stating the reports “completely misrepresented” the circumstances. During a trip to Panama, Hegseth assured reporters that the military provides every necessary resource to each ship and crew at all times.

He acknowledged that some deployments are longer than others and commended the sailors who braved the high seas and austere conditions with limited port visits. This statement came a day after Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who sits on the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, sent a letter to Hegseth and Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao seeking a detailed account of the ship’s conditions.

Blumenthal alleged sailors had faced shortages of essential supplies, water contamination, plumbing problems, mental health issues, deck safety worries, and delayed mailings causing care packages to be lost for months. He posed six inquiries to Pentagon leadership, requesting a response by August 27. Blumenthal emphasized that the sailors on the Lincoln had answered the nation’s call and that the Department owed them adequate supplies, maintenance, and support during this prolonged deployment.

The USS Abraham Lincoln has maintained a continuous nine-month sea voyage without a port visit, a record for the modern U.S. Navy. After departing San Diego in November 2025, the carrier and over 5,000 sailors and Marines supported American operations in the Middle East amid tensions with Iran.
