Gujarat cops rescue woman, arrest 8 as family tries to stop interfaith marriage

In Porbandar, Gujarat, a woman's interfaith marriage was thwarted by her relatives, leading to a police crackdown. The family attempted to stop the union by taking the woman to the marriage registrar to cancel her application. Alerted by a call to the police helpline, the Porbandar police arrived at the scene and "rescued" the woman.

Upon their arrival, eight people were arrested, including her relatives and their lawyer. These individuals were charged under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including obstruction of public servants, criminal force on a public servant, unlawful assembly, and rioting. The woman's lawyer, Akbar Suleiman Selot, was among those apprehended.

The incident occurred on August 13, when the woman and her new partner were separated against her will. The police have since transferred her to the Sakhi One Stop Centre for her protection. Further investigation is ongoing.
