Give fire trucks right-of-way, Fire service boss urges motorists

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Adeyemi Olumode, urged Nigerian motorists to give way to fire trucks and ambulances, emphasizing that every second during emergencies counts. At a One-Day National Stakeholders’ Summit on Fire Safety and induction of Federal Fire Service Public Relations Officers from 36 states, Olumode highlighted the increasing fire risks due to the complexity of Nigeria's cities, industries, and infrastructure.

He stressed that delays caused by motorists refusing to give way could worsen fire incidents and lead to avoidable loss of lives and property. Olumode also called on the public to keep access routes clear, avoid unnecessary crowds around fire incidents, and provide useful information to firefighters. He noted that the Federal Fire Service needed cooperation from all stakeholders to build a resilient fire safety system, considering the emerging risks like gas explosions, building collapses, flooding, and terrorist attacks.

Olumode highlighted the service's efforts in rehabilitation, commissioning of modern firefighting appliances, upgrading its National Fire Academy, and expanding specialized training. He also unveiled the Federal Fire Service Public Relations badge, emphasizing the importance of professional communication and crisis management.
