Gaza’s freelancers turn to coworking spaces to stay connected and employed

Gaza's freelancers are increasingly seeking coworking spaces to maintain their livelihoods and professional connections amid the ongoing conflict and economic turmoil. As of the latest assessment by the International Labour Organisation, Gaza's unemployment rate stands at an alarming 85 percent. The persistent war with militant groups and the collapse of the labor market have made online and freelance work a crucial source of income for many.

Amira Nassar, a 28-year-old journalist and voice-over artist, exemplifies this trend. She pays approximately 300 shekels ($90) a month to work in a coworking space near Al Sabra neighborhood, where access to internet and electricity is more reliable than in her home area. The additional quiet environment has been instrumental in her ability to maintain her work schedule of nine in the morning to six in the evening.

Similarly, Qosai Hassouna, a 26-year-old programmer, relies on coworking spaces to conduct client meetings without the disruption of intermittent internet connections. He stresses the difficulty of conducting professional discussions over a compromised line during times of war.

Gaza Sky Geeks, a support program run by Mercy Corps, offers essential assistance to local freelancers, particularly in the technology sector. Rand Safi, a senior manager at Gaza Sky Geeks, explains that the organization's technical training programs have resumed, with a focus on developing technical skills and maintaining the workforce's connection to the global technology industry.

They have also assisted various businesses, such as Concept Company, in establishing new coworking spaces and enhancing their solar power systems.
