FWSC disputes GAUA’s claims over allowances, rejects comparison with lecturers

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has rejected claims by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) over unpaid allowances and has dismissed comparisons between its allowances and those of university lecturers. The Commission expressed surprise at GAUA's assertion that its conditions of service and allowances should be compared to those of lecturers, arguing that such comparisons could escalate tensions among organized labor groups. GAUA is currently on strike, protesting about its conditions of service and allowances.

Dr. Smith Graham, the Chief Executive of the FWSC, stated that the Commission had conducted extensive discussions with the administrators and reached a settlement before concluding negotiations with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG). He emphasized that the FWSC's negotiations with GAUA were separate from those with UTAG, and that comparing the two groups was inappropriate.

"First of all, we have met with them, and we have had lengthy discussions with them and concluded negotiations with them," Dr. Graham explained.

Dr. Graham remarked that it was surprising to see a group engaging in comparisons within the labor front. He urged the administrators to return to the negotiating table, saying, "We are ready to engage them to address their concerns."
