Free event offers kids a chance to try sports, chess, breakdancing

Metro Detroit's Detroit Youth Sports Day Showcase, a free event, beckons children of all ages to try a diverse array of sports and activities, earning prizes, and receiving free medical check-ups. The showcase unfolds from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Centennial Park, situated at 1801 W. Jefferson, under the collaborative efforts of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy and Project Play: Southeast Michigan. Registration is mandatory.

This year's event provides opportunities for youths to test their skills in baseball, football, chess, skating, lacrosse, breakdancing, and other sports at various stations scattered across the park. Moreover, free sports physicals and vaccines are provided by Henry Ford Health, enhancing the appeal of the event. Rickey Jackson, program manager for Project Play: Southeast Michigan, emphasized the importance of the event, stating that it "opens doors" for young people to experience sports in an enjoyable and welcoming setting.

By bringing together multiple youth sports organizations under one roof, children are offered the chance to try new activities, discover their interests, and potentially engage in a lifelong hobby.

Prominent local organizations and sports teams, including the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings, Clark Park Coalition, Detroit Sports Commission, Great Lakes Regional Field Hockey, YMCA Metro Detroit, and others, will operate stations, catering to a wide range of interests. Participants can enhance their experience by obtaining bingo cards and visiting all the stations, with the chance to win prizes, such as Detroit Tigers tickets.

The event's organizer, Addison Mauck, director of visitor experience at Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, anticipates an even larger turnout this year, highlighting the event's growing popularity. The showcase concludes the Metro Detroit Youth Day 2.026 event, which has been transformed into a week-long celebration spanning six locations, including Belle Isle, Eastern Market, and Michigan Central, following the initial one-day format.

Free parking is available at the Assembly Garage, located at 1701 W. Lafayette Blvd., and along Jefferson Avenue and surrounding streets. To secure a spot, families can register through the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy website.
