France’s constitutional authority strikes down social media ban for under-15s

The Constitutional Council of France has ruled against a proposed ban on social media access for children under 15, dismissing it as inappropriate, unnecessary, and disproportionate to safeguard the freedom of expression and communication of minors. This decision comes as a setback for President Emmanuel Macron, who had been a strong advocate for the legislation and had planned to implement it by September.

The ruling has prompted the Elysee Palace to assign Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu the task of drafting a new version of the legislation that adheres to both the Constitutional Council's judgment and the European regulatory framework. President Macron has reaffirmed his commitment to the reform, despite the Constitutional Council's decision.

Meanwhile, numerous nations are increasingly implementing restrictions on social media usage for young users, prompted by growing concerns over the potential adverse effects of these platforms on children's well-being.
