Former Trinamool MLA Nirmal Ghosh mobbed outside police station

On Friday, August 14, 2026, former Trinamool Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Nirmal Ghosh faced a mob outside the Khardah Police Station in Kolkata. The incident occurred as Ghosh was being escorted to the Barrackpore Court in North 24 Parganas for his arrest. Despite being accompanied by police, he was subjected to physical attacks, with individuals throwing eggs, muck, sticks, bricks, and even kicks and slaps at him. Some protestors carried garlands made of shoes during the attack.

Ghosh, a former MLA from Panihati, served as the chief whip of the Mamata Banerjee government and was woundinging a helmet to prevent any injuries during his transport. He spent eight days in police custody and was also implicated in another case, accused of stealing lottery prize money. Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh criticized the attack, stating that the police should have prevented it, as the arrested individual had not been convicted. Kunal Ghosh also blamed the police for their perceived negligence in the matter.

Tribute was paid to the Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who appreciated the efforts of the CP Barrackpore police. The Trinamool MLA Kunal Ghosh condemned the incident and accused the police of being complacent. Former Trinamool councillor Sanjib Mukherjee, a neighbor of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, was also attacked while being taken to court for allegedly being present at the cremation of the victim's body and being a close aide of Ghosh.

Mr. Ghosh's attack is part of a series of incidents where numerous Trinamool leaders have faced mob intimidation since the party's defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. The attacks have included raising slogans against them, hurling eggs and bricks, heckling, and even physical assaults. Notable leaders such as Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee, General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, and others have also been subjected to such attacks since May 4.

The Trinamool Congress leadership has blamed the BJP for these incidents, while the BJP leadership has denied the allegations. The Calcutta High Court has questioned the role of the State administration and police for failing to ensure leaders' safety.
