For the Simons, showing animals at the Hartford Fair is a family affair rooted in love. This annual tradition requires a predictable schedule of events, including feeding, watering, bathing, grooming, and hoping the animals behave well in the show ring after months of training. Bethany and Derek Simon, of McKean Township, met at the fair in 2004 and later married, welcoming sons Weston and daughter Libby into the family.

Both children have been showing animals at the fair since around age 7 and 8, respectively, with the entire family pitching in to support their efforts. Weston's calf, Jolene, and Libby's calf, Murphy, have each won awards, bringing pride to the family and their grandparents, who are also in-laws. Derek and Bethany work full-time jobs while caring for the animals and attending the fair.

Marsha Conley, Bethany's mother, and Kathy Simon, Derek's mother, have also become fast friends through their children's shared experiences. The Simons' dedication pays off, as their hard work leads to recognition and honor at the fair.
