Flávio Bolsonaro Files 2026 Presidential Run at TSE

Brazil's right-wing succession fight took a significant step forward on 13 August when Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, officially filed his candidacy for the 2026 presidential election with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). This marked a crucial moment for the family's political legacy as the current president is ineligible to run, having been deemed ineligible in 2023.

Flávio, a senator representing Rio de Janeiro, registered his candidacy as a member of the PL, or Liberal Party, the same conservative party that backed his father in the 2022 election. He declared personal wealth of approximately R$8.1 million (about US$1.6 million), primarily comprising his upscale Brasília residence.

The registration process was not without hiccups. Fraudulent activity saw someone incorrectly switch Flávio's party affiliation to a minor party called Missão, which was swiftly corrected by the TSE. Additionally, an attempted alteration of President Lula's registration record was also thwarted. In response to these security concerns, the TSE temporarily suspended new party sign-ups to prevent further irregularities.

Despite these challenges, Flávio's candidacy was ultimately confirmed, symbolizing the family's push to ensure a credible and settled 2026 election. This move underscores the political dynamics at play within Brazil's conservative faction as they navigate the shifting landscape ahead of the upcoming presidential election.
