Emraan Hashmi vs Sunny Deol 19 years later: Awarapan 2 reverses 2007 box office loss

On June 29, 2007, Mohit Suri's gangster film Awarapan opened alongside Sunny Deol's sports drama Apne. While Apne went on to be a hit, Awarapan fared poorly, grossing only Rs 79 lakh on its first day and Rs 2.88 crore over the weekend, ultimately earning a total of Rs 12.18 crore worldwide. By contrast, Apne collected Rs 6.22 crore in its opening weekend and grossed Rs 38.85 crore in total.

Another film, Himesh Reshammiya's Aap Kaa Surroor, also released that weekend, but it ultimately earned less than both Awarapan and Apne. Twenty years later, in 2026, the tables have turned for the two actors. Emraan Hashmi's sequel Awarapan 2 has opened to strong box office numbers, collecting over Rs 18 crore in its opening day itself, surpassing the lifetime earnings of the original Awarapan.

Meanwhile, Sunny Deol's Partition-era drama Batwara 1947 has only managed to pull in around Rs 3.99 crore so far. This dramatic reversal in fortunes suggests that Emraan Hashmi has finally achieved his box-office moment against Sunny Deol, nearly two decades after their initial clash at the box office.
