Dubai teenager embarks upon T20 World Cup quest with Greece in Finland

A Dubai teenager, Philip Nair, is preparing to embark on a T20 World Cup journey with the Greek team during a European qualifier in Finland. This comes just a few months after his mentor, Graeme Cremer, made a remarkable comeback to international cricket during the 2023 T20 World Cup in India. Cremer, formerly Zimbabwe's captain and leg-spinner, had been absent from the sport for seven and a half years before his return.

Nair, who was born in Dubai and has spent his life in the UAE, has opted to represent Greece, the homeland of his mother. He was chosen for the Greek squad after impressing in a trial conducted by the Greek cricket federation. Nair's progress has been largely attributed to the guidance of his former coach, Dougie Brown, who is the founder of Legends Academy in Dubai.

Through Cremer's coaching, Nair has honed his skills in leg spin bowling, which he initially learned under Cremer's tutelage about a year and a half ago. The 10-team European sub-regional qualifier serves as the first phase of the qualification process for the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

The tournament's winners will advance to the main European qualifier the following year, with the aim of qualifying for the global event. Among the participants is Moises Henriques, a former Australian and IPL star who is captaining Portugal. As Nair's first memories of cricket are playing in his apartment corridor with his father, he acknowledges the importance of hard work and perseverance in his journey to reach this stage.

He looks up to Cremer as an inspiration, drawing motivation from his mentor's extraordinary comeback and his own recent successes.
