Dodgers' Dave Roberts Reacts to Edwin Diaz's Latest Blown Save

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts remained cautious regarding closer Edwin Diaz's performance after their recent defeat to the Milwaukee Brewers. Despite leading 4-2 in the ninth inning, Diaz failed to secure the win, allowing three runs in a 5-4 loss. Since returning from the injured list in late July, Diaz has blown three saves in his last four outings, surrendering nine runs over 5.2 innings.

Roberts was asked about demoting Diaz from the closer role, but stated, "Give me another option," as per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. The team is considering moving Diaz to lower-leverage assignments, with Tanner Scott, who has a 2.25 ERA and 16 saves this season, as a potential alternative. However, Roberts expressed reluctance to change Diaz's role due to his lengthy experience as a closer.

Roberts explained, "It's just not that easy when a guy's done it for seven, eight years, whatever it is, to change routines." As part of his job, Roberts aims to provide Diaz with the best opportunity to succeed, leaving it to the player to perform. Diaz, who signed a three-year, $69 million deal with the Dodgers after registering a 1.63 ERA with the New York Mets last season, admitted, "I've just got to find a way to pitch better."

He emphasized his past ability to overcome challenges, stating, "I've been in this position before, and I've been able to find a way to get better. I just need to sit down with the pitching coaches to see what I'm missing and what they say to see if we can fix it."
