Davies calls for WRU board to step down

Former Wales captain Jonathan Davies has urged the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board to resign. Davies, a former rugby player, joined Welsh business leaders and local Swansea politicians in demanding the dismissal of the governing body's chief executive, Abi Tierney. The WRU board, currently composed of 11 members following the departure of chair Richard Collier-Keywood in March 2026, has been in place for three years and has not achieved the desired results, according to Davies.

Davies called for the board to reassess itself and consider stepping down, allowing a new, more suitable board to take over. The WRU is also planning to reduce the number of professional teams from four to three by 2028, with Cardiff and Dragons set to receive licenses. However, this decision has raised concerns for both the Scarlets and Ospreys, with the latter expressing their disagreement.

Davies emphasized the need for change, stating that Welsh rugby has lost its connection with the people. He called for a collective effort to force the necessary changes for the future of Welsh rugby.
