DAP should remain in govt to keep reforms on track, says Syahredzan

DAP vice-chairman Syahredzan Johan has expressed concern that departing from the Cabinet would hinder the government's reform agenda and decrease Pakatan Harapan's ability to meet its election commitments. In a Facebook post, Syahredzan emphasized that remaining in the Cabinet is vital to maintaining the government's reform trajectory. He highlighted that DAP is the cornerstone of the administration, serving as its moral compass and ensuring adherence to the "straight and narrow" path.

Syahredzan clarified that reforms are not mere slogans or empty promises for DAP; they represent the party's commitment since its opposition days. Several reforms have already been accomplished, including the Parliamentary Services Act, amendments to the Audit Act, the formation of the Malaysian Media Council, and the Legal Aid and Public Defenders Act.

He also noted progress in Parliament, such as expanded Prime Minister's Question Time, increased authority for parliamentary select committees, and discussions on crucial reports from the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) and the Auditor-General.

Syahredzan mentioned that additional reform bills have been introduced this year, including a proposal to cap the prime minister's term in office, a constitutional amendment to separate the attorney-general and public prosecutor's roles, and a Freedom of Information Bill. He stressed that DAP intends to pursue further reforms, such as legislation to ensure equal allocations for all MPs—a demand the party has advocated for over decades.

According to Syahredzan, staying within the government allows DAP to leverage its position to push these reform bills through. Remaining in the opposition could result in losing the leverage needed to secure political support for these reforms. The upcoming decision by over 4,000 DAP delegates on Sunday will determine whether the party should continue its presence in the government for the remainder of the parliamentary term.

Perak DAP has unanimously favored remaining in the unity government to fulfill its election promises.
