Congress questions govt intent over caste census

The Congress party has criticized the Indian government's approach to the upcoming caste census, alleging that the lack of a pre-prepared state-wise list of castes leaves significant doubts regarding the government's intentions. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary in-charge of communications, pointed out that previous caste surveys in Bihar and Telangana included a pre-prepared list, making it easy for respondents to select their caste.

However, this time, the response will be recorded based on the individual's self-reporting, raising concerns about the government's true objectives. The Census, which is set to begin on September 1, will ask questions about the respondent's caste, among other personal details. This will be the first time caste details are collected as part of the Census in India.
