Chiba floods: Malaysians in Japan urged to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — The Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo is urging Malaysians in Japan to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel due to severe flooding and transport disruptions in Chiba Prefecture and surrounding areas of the Kanto region. Unprecedented rainfall has caused major transport disruptions, stranding thousands of travellers, including an estimated 7,000 at Narita International Airport.

At least eight people have died in the torrential rain, and the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a Level 5 rain warning for over a third of municipalities in Chiba Prefecture. Evacuation orders were issued for over 400,000 people at one point. The embassy advises Malaysians to monitor local conditions closely, stay away from flooded or low-lying areas, and follow instructions from Japanese authorities. The Malaysia's emergency hotline is available after office hours for any assistance needed.
