CFC Boss Wins Historic Silver for Nigeria at 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships

Adeyinka Samuel, currently the President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation and a recently appointed leader of the Commonwealth Fencing Federation (CFC), has brought a new era to Nigerian sports. Samuel made history by becoming the first Nigerian sabre fencer to win a medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships. Samuel, a former fencer who returned to competitive fencing after a 13-year hiatus, competed in the men’s sabre veteran category.

He faced off against experienced opponents from Wales, Australia, and Nigeria, drawing upon his past competitive spirit with determination and precision. Samuel secured a silver medal, marking his first fencing medal and a monumental achievement for Nigeria. Reflecting on his victory, Samuel expressed immense happiness, stating that winning a medal as a veteran is a joy he will cherish for a long time.

This victory signifies the potential of determination overcoming obstacles. Samuel highlighted the team's success, noting that Nigeria earned multiple medals, and the performances of young fencers and wheelchair athletes showcased the sport's serious potential in Nigeria. Samuel also praised the Commonwealth Championships, deeming it the best ever hosted, and as CFC President, his next goal is to see fencing reinstated at the Commonwealth Games.

He also underscored the need for collaboration between the International Fencing Federation (FIE) and the CFC to expand fencing's reach within the region and boost its profile in Nigeria.
