Broken-down ‘aboboyaa’ may have resulted in Ofankor crash – NRSA

A broken-down tricycle, colloquially referred to as an 'aboboyaa', may have initiated the chain of events that led to the devastating multiple-vehicle collision at Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Nsawam Highway, according to the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA). Felix Owusu, Senior Planning Manager at the NRSA, shared preliminary findings suggesting that the stationary tricycle could have been the catalyst for the crash, which has resulted in 12 fatalities.

Owusu explained that a sand-carrying tipper truck had come to a halt behind the disabled tricycle, while two passenger-filled Sprinter buses also halted in the vicinity. He further stated that another tipper truck approached the stationary line of vehicles at high speed and collided with them. Speaking on Citi FM, Owusu emphasized that the location and speed of the approaching truck might have made it challenging for the driver to evade the vehicles.

However, he cautioned against treating the preliminary account as the confirmed cause of the accident, stating that the information was primarily based on eyewitness descriptions. NRSA investigators are awaiting a full police report to establish the precise sequence of events to determine the exact cause of the series of collisions.

The crash, which occurred around 4 a.m. between the Ofankor Barrier and the John Teye enclave, resulted in 12 deaths and left 22 people hospitalized for treatment.
