Bloomberg: U.S. questionnaire tests NATO allies’ loyalty to President Trump’s policies

The U.S. administration has sent a questionnaire to NATO allies to assess their support for President Donald Trump's foreign policy, according to Bloomberg on August 14. The document, obtained by the news agency, inquires if each country has publicly supported U.S. foreign policy, banned U.S. military use of its bases, and spent money with American defense contractors.

Allies reacted strongly negatively to the initiative, per Bloomberg sources, viewing it as an attempt to force ideological loyalty for U.S. protection. The questionnaire follows a U.S. review of its military presence in Europe, with cuts expected by December. Bloomberg suggests that tying U.S. commitments to NATO allies with ideological loyalty could significantly alter the post-World War II transatlantic relationship.

This relationship was based on American military guarantees, allowing member states to differ politically without endangering the alliance.
