B.C. Finance Minister Brenda Bailey announces she has cancer, will reveal next steps Friday

British Columbia's Finance Minister Brenda Bailey has announced she has been diagnosed with early-stage, treatable cancer. The diagnosis was made a few weeks ago and she has received a positive outlook for a full recovery. Bailey shared her news on social media, stating that she will undergo treatment later this summer and expects to return to work prior to the fall legislative session.

She has been collaborating with Premier David Eby to determine the most effective approach to navigate treatment while ensuring the government's operations continue uninterrupted. Additional details about her condition are expected to be released on Friday.

It is not the first time Bailey's colleagues in the NDP have faced health challenges. Victoria-Beacon Hill MLA Grace Lore disclosed her colorectal cancer diagnosis in December 2024, followed by another surgery. She has since opted to vote virtually and resume working from home when the situation is suitable. Also in April, Premier Eby sought prayers for Vancouver-Strathcona MLA Joan Phillip as she battled an unspecified illness.
