Angry Governor Sindh Asks ‘Did Mirasis Make Pakistan?’

Sindh Governor Nehal Hashmi has ignited a social media debate with his questioning of the role of "Mirasis" during Independence Day celebrations. The comments surfaced during an event at the University of Karachi on August 13, where Hashmi was invited as Sindh governor. In a clip that went viral on Instagram and Facebook, Hashmi gestures towards people playing tabla and dancing before asking, "Did the Mirasis create Pakistan?"

He then questions whether Pakistan was formed through dancing. Many Pakistani social media accounts reposted the remarks, leading to widespread discussion about Independence Day celebrations and the use of the term "Mirasi." The controversy extends beyond differing opinions on celebrating Independence Day; it has also reignited debates on social class, caste-based labels, and whether cultural performers should be considered less connected to Pakistan's national identity.

Surprisingly, Hashmi reiterated at the same gathering that Pakistan belongs to everyone and called for unity, tolerance, and mutual respect.
