ANALYSIS: Osun’s 1.9 million voters and the LGAs that may decide the election

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced plans to establish an independent inquiry commission after the forthcoming August 15, 2026 gubernatorial election. This move comes in response to reports of killings and violence linked to the electoral process. During a press conference in Osogbo, the state capital, Adeleke expressed condolences to the families of victims of election-related violence, emphasizing that political differences should not lead to loss of life.

He stated that the proposed commission would investigate the circumstances surrounding reported killings and recommend measures to ensure accountability for perpetrators, irrespective of their political affiliations or positions. The governor hinted at the commission's formation to take place on Monday, promptly following the election.

Adeleke reiterated that the Osun State Government mourns the loss of every life taken during the election period, underlining that politics should not be a cause for loss of life. His administration also promised to establish a framework to support and compensate affected families, while urging residents to prioritize unity over political considerations.
