American missionary kidnapped in Niger freed after nine months

American missionary Kevin Rideout was abducted in Niger's capital, Niamey, in October by three armed individuals. SIM International, the organization representing Rideout, reported that he has been freed and is currently in good health under the care of US officials. The exact circumstances of his release have not been disclosed.

Rideout was reportedly driven out of Niamey after his abduction. No armed group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. Niger has been a frequent target of attacks from various armed groups, including some linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State. The US embassy in Niamey issued a security alert following Rideout's abduction, stating that American citizens remain at a heightened risk of kidnapping throughout Niger.

The country is currently governed by a military junta that seized power in 2023, replacing the democratically elected president Mohamed Bazoum. The new authorities have broken ties with Western partners, including the US, and have formed a new security and diplomatic alliance with Russia. In June, a terrorist attack at Niamey's main airport resulted in the deaths of over 30 people, marking the second such attack at the airport in a single year.

The ongoing violence in the region underscores the growing threat posed by armed groups targeting urban centers in Africa's Sahel region.
