Alberta mayors welcome more money for local housing infrastructure

Alberta mayors are excited about the prospects of their communities following a government deal to fund housing infrastructure. On July 29, federal and provincial governments convened in Red Deer to unveil a new program aimed at expediting homebuilding, with a significant portion of the funding dedicated to establishing water and wastewater systems for residences.

The federal government has allocated $510 million through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, with Edmonton contributing roughly one-third of the eligible project costs. The province estimates this amounts to about $428 million in funding that can be leveraged. Municipalities such as Okotoks, a town of 33,000 residents south of Calgary, stand to benefit from this initiative.

Mayor Tanya Thorn expressed optimism about utilizing the funds to expedite a completed water line project. Thorn highlighted that their community currently owes roughly $50 million on the project, and with this new funding, they will actively pursue additional financial support.

Similarly, Airdrie Mayor Heather Spearman welcomed the federal and provincial governments' investment in infrastructure, particularly as several major projects are underway. Spearman noted that the fund will accelerate the construction of a Southwest recreation facility and a skating facility, both integral to Airdrie's 10-year strategic plan. Spearman emphasized the importance of having the necessary infrastructure to support these developments, such as the upcoming hospital, which Airdrie is still lacking.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, during his visit to Red Deer to announce the water infrastructure bursary, also mentioned a collaborative effort with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to accelerate affordable housing construction in Western Canada. Spearman expressed her optimism about the impact of such investments across Western Canada, emphasizing the importance of robust foundational infrastructure to support the region's growth.
