Albanese says Trump considering tariff exemption after phone call

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has utilized a rare conversation with former US President Donald Trump to advocate for a tariff exemption. Albanese held a rare press conference after speaking with Trump, the first since their heated discussion about the fate of Iranian female footballers in Australia last March.

The call lasted around 40 minutes and was described as productive, constructive, and substantial. Albanese requested that Trump either consider a full exemption for Australia or refrain from increasing the current 10% tariff rate. He emphasized Australia's investment in the US, noting a trade surplus of $442 billion over 20 years.

Albanese did not expect much change in Trump's stance on tariffs, but noted that the US president promised to give consideration to his request. They also discussed Iran's war, with Australia urging for its end, and AUKUS, with both sides confirming the nuclear submarine program's progression. Albanese also addressed China's recent ballistic missile test in the Pacific, which sparked unease among Pacific nations and Western allies.
